More Doing Digital History in 2016

Wow! What a great workshop. A lot of work, but well worth it. It’s like writing home from summer camp – lots of cool stuff, where to start?

I think I’m most likely to use the mapping software, like Carto, and the database stuff, like R. I can see uploading much of what I’ve done already in my earlier version of my website and create a map that allows people to go to places and read documents or hear podcasts about what happened where they are, and why it is important. Frequently apps that dwell on place lose what is important by accentuating the details. I hope to always tie those details, whether about Cherokee Removal in the 1830s or the transition from rural to suburban in the late 20th century. Maps allow people to visualize place, and allow an author to provide vast amounts of context tied to something concrete. Enough for now.
