FAQs

  • I am not an Americanist, may I apply? Anyone may apply, but we are looking for established historians researching and teaching in the field of American history.
  • Are graduate students eligible to apply? No. We are not accepting graduate students for Doing Digital History 2016.
  • Am I eligible to participate if I do not have a PhD? Yes. The institute is designed for experienced historians working in a variety of careers, not solely for university history professors.
  • Can I attend Doing Digital History for 1 week? No. The institute is designed as a full two-week course, much like one would plan out a semester-long course. If you know ahead of time that you cannot participate for the two weeks, please do not apply.
  • Do you provide child care for participants during the institute? No, unfortunately we cannot.
  • Are there any required weekend activities or class sessions over the weekends? No, we will meet on weekdays from 9 am – 4pm, and other time is yours.
  • Can I stay with friends/family during the institute? Of course! Please tell us at the time when we are making travel arrangements that you will not need a hotel room. You will be responsible for getting yourself to and from campus each day.
  • Who will be responsible for making travel arrangements to and from the institute? GMU will use a travel agent who will book transportation to and from the DC area for all participants. Secondary transportation will be the responsibility of each participant. Additional information is available in the Costs and Accommodations section.
  • What costs are involved in participating? The NEH grant funding is designed to cover most expenses. See the Costs and Accommodations section for more specific information.
  • Will computers be provided for participants? No. Each participant must bring their own laptop and have the ability (ie, admin privileges) to download and run software on their machines.
